“Can Depression be Fixed? The Truth about Healing and Hope”

Depression can feel like a heavy fog that just won’t lift - no matter how much sleep you get, how many self-help books you read, or how many people say, “Just think positive”. If you’ve ever found yourself wondering, “Is this just how I’ll always feel?” you are not alone.
But here’s the truth: depression is not a life sentence - and yes, it is fixable. But perhaps not in the way that many people imagine.
Fixable vs Curable: Let’s Clear That Up
The word “fixable” suggests that depression can be completely erased, never to return again. For some, that may be the case. For others, depression may show up at different points in life, especially during times of high stress, loss, or change.
”Fixable” also suggests that we are defective in some way and when you're in the depths of depression, it can feel like you're broken. However it is important to remember that - you are not broken - you are human.
You might feel stuck, exhausted, unmotivated, or even numb; and while those feelings are very real, they do not have to be permanent, nor are they a reflection of your worth.
Depression is not a personal failure, depression can come out of the blue descending upon us when we least expect it and it can also be a response to various stressors. Depression is much more common than most people realise – but the most important part? It’s treatable.
What “Fixable” Really Means
We often think of “fixing” something as making it go away forever - like repairing a broken appliance. But mental health doesn't quite work like that.
Healing from depression often means:
Understanding what's fuelling it
Learning new ways to respond to thoughts and feelings
Rebuilding energy, hope, and a sense of purpose
Gaining the tools to manage future lows if they return
So, while there might not be a one-size-fits-all cure, there absolutely is a way forward - and therapy is a big part of that journey.
How CBT Can Help
As a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist, my role is to help you make sense of what you’re going through and gently guide you toward change. CBT is an evidence-based approach that focuses on how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are all connected.
In our work together, we’ll look at:
The patterns that may be keeping you stuck
How to challenge self-critical or hopeless thoughts
Practical steps to bring back structure, motivation, and meaning
Building confidence and resilience over time
It’s not about quick fixes or pretending to feel positive. It’s about developing real, lasting strategies that help you regain control and reconnect with life.
What Healing Might Look Like
Healing from depression doesn’t always mean you’ll never feel down again. It often means:
You bounce back faster when you do feel low
You can recognise your early warning signs and act on them
You have tools to cope - and confidence that those tools work
You begin to enjoy things again, even if it starts small
Progress might be slow at times, but it is absolutely possible. And no one has to do it alone.
Final Thought: You’re Not Broken
Depression doesn’t mean you're broken or weak. It means you’re human and your mind and body are asking for support. The good news is, help is available, and change is possible.
If you or someone you care about is struggling with depression, know that therapy can help - and that hope is not just a word. It’s a path forward.
