Taking the first step into therapy can feel daunting - but you're not alone. Whether you're feeling anxious, unsure, or simply curious about what Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) involves, this blog will give you a clear idea of what to expect from your first session with me Rebecca, at Littlemoor Therapy Practice.

A Personal Welcome

Before anything else, I want you to know; I’ve been where you are. Six years ago I was struggling with post natal depression, a condition I had treated many times before but never suffered from, and I found myself, a therapist of many years.... in therapy. Oh yes, I’ve sat in the client’s chair, wondering what to expect, unsure of how much to share, and worrying about whether therapy would really help. I understand how vulnerable it can feel at first - but I also know how much easier it becomes over time.

That personal journey inspired me to create a practice that feels safe, comforting, and truly welcoming, a place where you can begin to explore, heal, and grow at your own pace.

Your Therapy Space

The therapy room at Littlemoor has been designed with care and intention. Soft pinks and greys set a calming tone, while salt lamps and fairy lights offer a warm, gentle glow. The lighting is low and soothing, helping ease the intensity that can sometimes come with emotional work.

Privacy screens cover the windows to ensure you feel safe and secure, and every detail - from the cosy furnishings to the offer of hot or cold drinks and toilet facilities ensure that you feel looked after. Many clients have said it feels more like stepping into a peaceful retreat than a clinical space.

Your First Session: A Gentle Start

Our first session together is all about getting to know each other. You’ll have the chance to share what’s brought you to therapy and what you’re hoping to get out of it. There’s no pressure to say anything you’re not ready to - this space is yours, and we’ll go at a pace that feels right for you.

I’ll also introduce the basics of CBT - how it works, what kinds of difficulties it can help with, and how we can use it to begin untangling the challenges you're facing. CBT is a practical, structured approach that looks at how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours interact - and how small shifts can lead to meaningful change.

A Safe Pair of Hands

With over 15 years of experience in the therapeutic field, I bring not only professional knowledge, but deep empathy and understanding to our work together. I’ve worked with a wide range of clients and issues, and my focus is always on creating a space where you feel respected, heard, and truly supported.

Looking Ahead

By the end of your first session, we’ll have begun to shape your therapy journey together. We might start outlining goals - whether it's managing anxiety, improving your mood, working through past experiences, or simply learning to understand yourself better.

You’ll also have a chance to ask questions, raise concerns, or just reflect. Some people leave their first session feeling relieved, others thoughtful - but almost everyone feels lighter knowing they’ve taken that first brave step.

Final Thoughts

Choosing to start therapy is a courageous act of self-care. At Littlemoor Therapy Practice, I’ve done everything I can to make your experience as supportive, calming, and welcoming as possible - both in the environment I have created and in our therapeutic relationship.

If you’re considering CBT, or even if you’re just thinking about whether therapy might be right for you, I’d love to hear from you. You are very welcome here.
